Monitoring Environment for Parallel and Distributed Programs

(BMBF-WTZ Project with Poland)

Project Goal

The project aims at developing a universal monitoring environment for parallel and distributed programs, and at releasing this environment to the research community as a basis for the development of improved, portable programming tools. The basis for the project is the monitoring system OCM developed by LRR-TUM and extended by ICS-AGH.

The project is funded by the German and Polish Ministery for Research, respectively, in the framework of the WTZ programme (scientific and technical collaboration between Germany and Eastern Europe).

Project Schedule and Milestones

• Sept. 2002 - Feb. 2003 Enhance the configurability and portability of the OCM
  • Make the OCM core independent of specific communication libraries.
  • Encapsulate the support for PVM and MPI into dynamically loadable modules.
  • Provide support for configuring the OCM w.r.t. different operating systems and hardware.

• Dec. 2002 - Feb. 2003 Simplify the usage of the OMIS interface (Dec. 2002 - June 2002)

• March 2003 - Aug. 2003 Methods for increasing the scalability of the OCM
  • Evaluate alternatives for distributing and replicating the OCM's components.
  • Examine the use of multi-threading for the event and action processing inside the OCM.

• March 2003 - Feb. 2004 New monitoring techniques for multi-threaded applications
  • Review and evaluate existing support in operating systems and thread libraries.
  • Define an interface between the monitor process and the application monitor.
  • Design and implement the application monitor; examine its integration into the OCM.
  • Practical evaluation

• Dec. 2003 - Aug. 2004 Examine the benefits and problems of using object oriented methods
  • for the definition of the monitoring interface,
  • for the implementation of the monitoring system.
