SMiLE: Applications and benchmarks

Applications from the domain of numerical computing

The SMiLE groups currently uses two large industrial codes from the area of numerical simulation for the evaluation of their message passing middleware: Taskflow/CfX and PolOpt. Taskflow/CfX is implemented and distributed by AEA technology and is a state-of-the-art CFD code used in many fields ranging from racing car design to the design of turbines for nuclear power plants. PolOpt provided by ABB is a code for the simulation of electric fields and is used by ABB itself for the design and optimization of high--performance transformers. Both codes are in daily usage by the companies that provided the source and have proven their parallel efficiency in many test cases.

Applications from the domain of image processing

In close cooperation with the department of nuclear medicine at the university clinic "Rechts der Isar" of TUM, the SMiLE groups work on the parallelization and efficient deployment of codes for the reconstruction and evaluation of PET (Positron Emission Tomography) images. This is a very compute and I/O intensive task with large data volumes and can therefore benefit extremely from the deployment of clusters of commodity PCs. Codes under investigation include the actual reconstruction of raw data from PET scanners, the spectral analysis of PET information, but also the visualization of acquired data using volume rendering.

Benchmarks

Within the SMiLE project a whole range of benchmarks and benchmark suites is used for the evaluation of the individual components. The results of these experiments together with a description of the exact benchmark can be found in the various SMiLE publications.

Some interesting examples are the usage of the
