Cooperation of the SMiLE group with ABB Heidelberg

Deploying Clusters in the Simulation Process of High Voltage Apparatus

This Project is an interdisciplinary project involving engineers, mathematicians and computer scientists. The project is funded by the ABB Corporate Research Center Heidelberg since May 1999. Prof. Christoph Schwab of the Seminar for Applied Mathematics at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich is the leader of the mathematicians. At ABB Corporate Research Heidelberg the Electromagnetics Systems Group uses an SCI based PC cluster for their simulations. The computer scientists are working under the leadership of Dr. Wolfgang Karl at the Technische Universität München, Munich.

The goal of this project is to examine the possibilities of utilizing an SCI-based PC cluster for CPU-intensive calculations as a suitable alternative to expensive supercomputers. The project also investigates new communication intensive equation system solvers that are running on SCI based PC clusters.

More information about the application.

This work is supported by ABB Coporate Research Center Heidelberg/Ladenburg.
