Modern software applications make heavy use of special algorithms. Although general purpose microprocessors like Intel Pentium (-II, Pro) or AMD K6 are quite fast there is a noticeable breakdown in system performance while processing these algorithems. The FaRM project (FPGA-based Reconfigurable Microprocessors) evaluates dedicated algorithms in respect of the possibility to integrate these into hardware with focus on reconfigurable architectures.
